Argentina win against Italy

Argentina win against Italy in Rome.
Pope Francis receives an olive tree from Lionel Messi and Gianluca Buffon ahead of Italy's friendly with Argentina.

Pope Francis met Argentina’s footballers ahead of their friendly game in Rome on Wednesday, receiving a silver vase from his countrymen and an olive tree from the Italians, as well as a signed football.

Even without Lionel Messi, who was injured but was pleased to meet the pontiff, the visitors recorded an impressive 2-1 win. Gonzalo Higuain struck first after 20 minutes before midfielder Ever Banega doubled Argentina’s lead four minutes after the break. Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne pulled a goal back with 13 minutes remaining but the away side were able to hold on for the victory, no doubt much to the delight of Pope Francis.

Argentina’s great South American rivals Brazil –in their first game since their Confederations Cup joy in June – had less success in their European friendly, losing to Switzerland due to Daniel Alves’s own goal three minutes after the interval. Haris Seferovic’s cross from the right was met at the far post by the Barcelona full back who could only steer the ball into the net.

England win ashes 3-0

An inspired spell of fast bowling from Stuart Broad catapulted England to a 74-run win over Australia in the fourth Test and sealed victory in the Ashes series.

Chasing 299 for victory, Australia were well placed on 168-2 but lost their next eight wickets for 56 runs as they collapsed to 224 all out.

Tim Bresnan turned the tide when he had opener David Warner caught behind for 71 and Broad followed up with a devastating burst of 6-20 in 45 balls to finish with 11 wickets in the match.

A breathless and barely believable evening session, in which nine wickets fell, ended in fading light at 19:40 BST when Broad had Peter Siddle caught at mid-off to put England 3-0 up in the series with one match to play.

Amazingly, less than two hours before the final wicket fell, it appeared far more likely that Australia would be heading to The Oval on 21 August with a chance of levelling the series.

The tourists made the ideal start to their run chase as Warner and Chris Rogers put on 109 for the first wicket - Australia's first century opening partnership in the Ashes since The Oval in 2005.

Rogers eventually fell one short of a half-century - caught by Jonathan Trott at slip off Swann - but even when the off-spinner followed up with the wicket of Usman Khawaja for 21, there was little sign of the madness that followed.

The turning point arrived when Bresnan produced a superb delivery to remove the dangerous Warner, who was drawn into pushing at a ball angled across him and got a thin nick through to Matt Prior.

Sensing their opportunity, England pounced in ruthless fashion. Broad sent captain Michael Clarke's off stump cart-wheeling before Steve Smith played on as he attempted to pull.

Roared on by the England supporters in the Chester-le-Street crowd, Bresnan trapped Shane Watson in front to leave Australia in disarray.

Broad, bowling as quickly and aggressively as at any time in his career, then had Brad Haddin and Ryan Harris lbw before bowling Nathan Lyon.

With just one wicket needed, England were granted an extra half-hour but, with the light fading, the umpires insisted on them bowling spinners from both ends.

Six overs came and went without any great alarm before the reappearance of the setting sun gave Alastair Cook the opportunity to go back to his pacemen.

Six balls from James Anderson failed to deliver the breakthrough but, when Broad returned from the Lumley End, it took him only three to induce a false stroke from Siddle and send the crowd into raptures.

Broad's match figures of 11-121 were the finest of his career and the best by an England bowler in the Ashes since Phil Tufnell's 11-93 at The Oval in 1997.

Earlier, Australia took England's last five wickets for 96 runs to bowl them out for 330, with Harris claiming 7-117.

The outstanding fast bowler, whose omission from the first Test is beginning to look like a glaring oversight, bowled centurion Ian Bell and Prior with successive balls and ended a brief cameo of 13 from Broad with a brutal bouncer that he gloved to gully.

Bresnan, who made 45, and Swann fought back with a crucial attacking partnership of 42 and, by the time Anderson was last man out, England had pushed their lead to within two runs of 300.

Even then, for long periods of the day it looked as if Australia would pull off a famous chase with something to spare.

But when Broad and Bresnan found their stride in the evening session, England were irresistible.

Barcelona win 3-1 goal

Barcelona end Asia tour with win over Malaysia XI

Spanish giants Barcelona wrapped up their Asian tour with another comprehensive victory Saturday, beating a Malaysian XI 3-1 at the Shah Alam Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

With World Player of the Year Lionel Messi on the bench over injury concerns, Brazilian wonderkid Neymar was the star of a tight first half, showcasing his talents to make one goal and score another.

First, the 21-year-old wriggled free on the left before sending a pinpoint cross for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas to head home.

It was a tame header and Malaysian goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat should have done better, but he may have been distracted by a firecracker that was set off by a fan.

Malaysia, who had gone closest to opening the scoring, equalised in the 40th minute when the ball fell to Amri Yahyah, and the striker curled in from the edge of the box.

The home fans' joy was short-lived as two minutes later, Neymar -- who was this week reportedly diagnosed with anaemia -- broke free and beat two defenders before shooting home.

Neymar joined Barcelona after a summer move from Santos and opened his account for the club in the 7-1 win over the Thai national team on Wednesday, on the first leg of a tour designed to promote Barca's brand in the region.

The second half was a drab affair with the teams making multiple changes to their lineups, which disrupted the flow.

There were few attacks, and the fans showed their displeasure by whistling at the players.

Many will have already been disgruntled after the match venue was moved from Bukit Jalil National Stadium because of an uneven pitch, which Malaysian Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin described as an "embarrassment" for the country.

Barcelona, however, managed to add a third after 74 minutes through Gerard Pique, who rammed the ball past substitute goalkeeper Farizal Marlias.

The tour comes three years after Barcelona's last visit to the football-mad continent, before the start of the La Liga season later this month.

Barcelona vice president Jordi Moix Latas said a survey by the club showed it had more fans in Asia than Europe and the Americas combined.

More than 40,000 tickets were sold for the friendly in Malaysia.

"We realise not all our fans can afford to fly to Spain to watch us, and we want to reward them by coming here and spreading our brand," he said.

"In fact, our number one Facebook fans are from Indonesia. As such, we intend to travel to this region for more pre-season matches in the coming years."

According to Sport24, Afridi reached the landmark in the 16th over of Pakistan’s reply to the West Indies’ 152 for seven in the first Twenty20 International.
The Pakistan player has been in and out of the national side for quite a while now and has come back to form recently against West Indies.

MIISSE GOAL 50

arcelona star Lionel Messi has won the Goal 50 award for the world’s best footballer after another record-breaking season.

The Argentinian forward claims the title for the third time in recognition of an incredible campaign during which he beat Gerd Muller’s 40-year-old record of 85 goals scored in a calendar year.

The 26-year old scored 91 goals in 2012 and increased his total as Barcelona’s all-time top scorer to 313 goals in all competitions by the end of the season.

Messi struck in his 19th consecutive La Liga game in March 2013, becoming the first footballer in history to score in consecutive matches against every team in a major professional league.

After receiving the trophy Messi said: "I’m very excited about this. As players, we work the entire year to win honours for the team, we don’t look for the individual awards, but when they come it’s an incentive and gives us strength to continue on the same path."

The Goal 50 is regarded as one of the most credible and respected awards in sport because it is chosen by the world’s biggest football website.
