Argentina win against Italy

Argentina win against Italy in Rome.
Pope Francis receives an olive tree from Lionel Messi and Gianluca Buffon ahead of Italy's friendly with Argentina.

Pope Francis met Argentina’s footballers ahead of their friendly game in Rome on Wednesday, receiving a silver vase from his countrymen and an olive tree from the Italians, as well as a signed football.

Even without Lionel Messi, who was injured but was pleased to meet the pontiff, the visitors recorded an impressive 2-1 win. Gonzalo Higuain struck first after 20 minutes before midfielder Ever Banega doubled Argentina’s lead four minutes after the break. Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne pulled a goal back with 13 minutes remaining but the away side were able to hold on for the victory, no doubt much to the delight of Pope Francis.

Argentina’s great South American rivals Brazil –in their first game since their Confederations Cup joy in June – had less success in their European friendly, losing to Switzerland due to Daniel Alves’s own goal three minutes after the interval. Haris Seferovic’s cross from the right was met at the far post by the Barcelona full back who could only steer the ball into the net.
